Hey guys Im working out all the kinks on getting my new vortec 350 crate engine running. Its carbureted and Ive read that you need to have a melonized gear with any gm crate engine equipped with a roller cam so the gears dont get chewed up. GM says to use 10456413 but it is a .491 shaft diameter gear and my hei takes a .5 shaft diameter gear. I searched for a .5 steel melonized gear since the GM one is steel but I cant find one. MSD makes melonized iron gears with a .5 shaft diameter but does it have to be steel like the GM recomended gear or is it fine if its iron as long as its melonized? Im just kinda confused cause I thought gear selection was based on the gear metal used but if being melonized is all that matters then that would actually be great cause I cant find a darn .5 steel melonized gear!!!!
MSD TECH "Once the surface has been penetrated the gear will wear away in no time."
This following link is a major concern to me. Its the reason why im asking if MSD's Melonized Iron gear is the same as GM's Melonized Steel gear. MSD says their gears are melonized and for roller cam applications but I just dont trust it cause its iron. Will a melonized steel gear wear the same way as the iron msd one in this link after the coating is penetrated?
Another problem is I cant find anything that confirms what my L31-R goodwrench engins hydraulic roller cams gear is made out of. Im just trying to find out what cam gear material i have for sure before i buy an expensice gear and find out its wrong and my cam has a different kind of metal gear. Ive read so many damn different things its just starting to frustrate me. Ive read some aftermarket cams have iron gears on em, that some oem hydraulicroller cams can have iron gears, that hydraulic roller cams have steel gears.....So many different resaults its just confusing the heck outta me.
Its honestly just starting to really irritate me cause I cant find an answer. Its also one of the last parts I need to figure out before I can fire up this nice new engine.
