Eric: The first part of your post is exactly right, but 3 yards of upholstery fabric is 9 feet long and 54" wide, not 36" wide and will easily do everything he wants to cover and then some.

Bigdog: You can use any fabric you like, but vinyl or 100% polyester fabric like Ultraleather is probably going to be the easiest for you to work with.

Thanks Dan, I'm not an upholsterer, was just trying to help out. Didn't realize the material comes that wide, figured 3 yards meant a true 3 yards in measurement. Last fabric I bought was headliner material for a '74 GTO, the perforated vinyl with 1/16" foam on the back that is then glued to a fiber board. I just told my local upholstery lady what I was doing and she sold me enough to do the job, as she really didn't want to do the whole job as it is a pain to prep the old board for the new material.

Fiber glass mat and resin or fiberglass reinforced Bondo(Tiger Hair) depending on how bad it is.. Mat and resin for the big cracks or pieces with large parts broke off, the bondo for small areas and edge chips.

Absolutely positively not. That stuff is tablecloth material, and what you need is automotive or marine grade vinyl. If you don't use something intended to be in the sun, you'll be doing it over again in two years. Try looking HERE

That one is not auto or marine grade either, but it is better than the first one you posted. You need something soft, as thin as possible, and pliable to make the job easier. Why not find an upholstery shop near you and ask to see samples? At least then you'll know what to look for on the internet.
