just wanted to say: excellant choice in rides guy, I have a 60 elk and an 80, trying to get my hands on a 67, my grandad had a 67 El Camino SS 427...........

anyway to your question, man I did my carpet on a few of my rides and I've come to the firm conclusion that its definately worth the $$$ to invest in the oem precut stuff, makes it a hell of a lot less of a pain in the ***

Yeah, if you dont have a sewing machine where you can sew binding on the edge of the carpet, it will look like crap and the edges will fray quickly. And if the free black carpet you got is the stretchy stuff, often used on cheap speaker boxes, it will fall apart within a month and look like crap. Some upholsterers use that stuff because it is stretchy and can be molded to the floor, but guaranteed it will fall apart within a month (if you drive it often).
