i have a stock intake manifold with about a 1" spacer in between the manifold and the carb.
the spacer is so i could go from the four big holes on the carb to the two big holes and two small holes on the original stock intake manifold.

I think for a start you should cut out the top of the stock manifold so that it has no holes anymore so it's like two opposing peanut shape thingys divided, hard to explain in words. What happened to your Quadrajet?

I run a 625 Carter on my 305 and don't have any problems. I run the stock jetting and the accelerater pump in the hole nearest to the carb body. I think you're chasing a timing issue. The 305 likes alot of initial timing. 12* or so. I run the vacuum advance off a manifold sorce, and one light and one medium spring on the mechanical with the stock weights. I use a stock aluminum intake and adapter as well. I tried the Performer intake and didn't like it. Lost a noticable amount of bottom end torque, and gas mileage as well running the same carb. Dan
