Carter Carb Experts

Need some help. I came across a Carter AVS carb today, # 4028S. It came off a '66 Caprice 327.

A Google search confirmed a 4028 (no S) was factory on a 275hp 327.

This is the wierdest Carter I've ever seen. The fuel inlet is on the back, not on the back corner like all I've ever seen. Also, on the top near the accelerator pump there is some sort of maybe vacuum release gizmo. The rest of the carb appears to be normal Carter/Edelbrock.

Anyone know more about this carb...cfm, other applications?

Thanks in advance.

The carb.

i played around with a lot of chevy small block in the 60's, but i an't never seen one like this one. the gizmo ,i think is a vent for the float bowls, is it not over the bowl on the drivers side. The high speed idle is on the back instead of the left ( driver side) front. if its not some kind of Canadian cross over, i'm lost. hope someone else can help, if find out, I'd like to know what it is.

Thanks, Malc, good idea. The rebuilders probably know more about this one. It appears to be an oddball.

We ran one on our Stock Eliminator car for years back in the 90's. Not that exact model number but an AVS none the less. The ones we ran didn't have that device you're pointing at but I would agree that it's a vent of some sort.

It looks a lot like the bowl vent on an old Q-jet, so that'd be my guess. The factory probably just requested some extra or unique non-standard features when they contracted for a supply of AVS carbs.
