Hello stu, The servo cover is on the rt. side of the tran's and this 56 model has a vac. mod. that is screwed into this cover. It's unlike the 58 model's that have a vac. mod assy that bolt's to this servo cover. The lenght is the same as the 55 model. As far as i can tell the only difference between the 56 and the 56 is the vac. mod., dipstick, fill tube and the case vent

I don't know what you have but it doesn't sound Powerglidish.
Is that a word? Can I say that? Any PG modulator screws in. No extra bolt on's that i have ever seen. Can you get a pic of it? |

Hey stu. I'll have to scrape of all the grease and grime off it to take a picture, but i'll do it tomarrow and post the picture. The tran's is out of my dad's 56 belair 4 door hardtop. It had a 265 v-8, 4 barr. carter carb, with power packed head's. We scraped out the car in the early 70's and i kept the tran's so it's ben setting for 30 plus year's. c-ya sling

hey stu, i have 8 picture's of the 56 model glide for you. here is the first one. This picture is the 56 unit with the 55 extension housing beside it and the 55 servo cover. As you can see the 55 modle is shorter than the 56. I thought last night that they were the same lenght

Hey stu, here's pic 5. Note the modge on the 56 unit
Hey stu. i'm going to have to cut the pictures down to only 5. The other 3 pictures are too big in file size to send on this post. if ya want i could send them to your e-mail addy. If ya want to see them send me a e-mail to slingslingbinks@msn.com and i'll send them to ya over my yahoo addy, witch is slingslingbinks@yahoo.com. Msn has a problem with sending pictures, but yahoo will send them out to you. I hope these pictures let ya know the diff. between a 55 and a 56 cast iron powerglide. in a nutshell the 56 is longer, has a case vent, a longer fill tube and a vac. modge. c-ya sling Last edited by slingslingbinks; 09-30-2004 at 09:19 PM. |

I hate to disillusion you but that's a 1958-62 transmission.
Somebody did a switcheroo. You will note on your 1955 the transmission mounts are on the front housing while the supposedly 1956 which is a 58-62 only has a mount at the back of the main case. |

Hey stu. are ya sure it's a 58 to 62 Glide. it's for sure out of my dad's 56, my brother ran the same car for a few year's and he said that he never remembered it being replaced. And my dad passed away 2 week's ago so i can't ask him. It's not impossible that some one swaped it into the 56. or mabey it's ben too many year's and i picked it up else where. I'm not an expert on the cast iron glides, so i will take your word what it is. Do you know if the vent and the longer fill tube will take care of the burping problem? I know that with the different servo cover that's on the tran's that i have, i can see that the cases are also differnt than the 55 unit. It would be nice if there was a way to tell what year that ya have. Tk's sling

The tube and breather will help with the burping.
If you do put it in your 55 be ready for a big surprise. The gears aren't where they should be. The 55-57 had PNDLR. The 58-62 had PRNDL. Can you get a pic of the other side. It will help me nail it down for you.
