Casting Codes

There is a circle of cast dots on the back of my Chevy block by the bell housing flange. They look like a clock. Is this the time of day that the block was cast?

Yes. There should be an indicator of the shift, too.

You are welcome. BTW, you can use the date code to see if your block was cast on Monday or Friday, or if you got lucky. At least the odds are in your favor.

The front pad where the suffix code line is at will also have a date code (month and day, use the year the block was cast). You can use it to see what day of the week the engine was assembled. Not that it matters that much, especially if it's been rebuilt.
