casting numbers

I have spoken to a guy who has an engine for sale.He thinks itis a sbc 350 i have ask for the casting numbers that are on the back ledge and he gave me these numbers L050r3 dose anyone no what that is? ford or chevy or what, Also in the oil filter is on the left hand side as you look at the front of the engine, so this put the starter on the right hand side
dose anyone have a any idears to what this might be

It looks there is a need for links to other sights that have engine Id info and also books that have engine id info.
Stuartc I would suggest picking up a copy of one of the How to rebuild a small block chev books if you are looking for a small block chev engine. They usually have the id information in them. Your local book store should be able to get one for you. you can go to www.Amazon.com put Rebuild small block Chevys in the search There are a couple of titles there to give you an idea of what to ask/look for.
Also years ago Car Craft had a pretty good article and list of Small block Chev casting numbers.
