catalytic converter

ok guys we all hate these things but im studing for a motor vech inspection job when did they first start using these 1975 ? or was this just on calif. cars and other states followed later or was this a usa thing all at once i cant remember.thanks

all domestic cars got them, California had more stringent emissions standards tho
