tbi is real basic actually

youll have to change wiring,
fuel sender unit
accel cable
the 700r4 lockup converter wont function anymore

and more issues also.,.

id leave it be if it runs fine.

hmm

tbi is easy to repair and make run great, rarely anythin goes bad other than fuel pump, EGR valve, cap rotor, or IAC needing cleaned,

im olld school learned on carbs also and have obnly owned a few tbi vehicles but now that i have had a few i love em,. run good and reliable and easy to work on,

no one is ever happy with what they have though, for some reason,.

good luck

OK I'm surprised, 1986 should be TPI which came on in 85 to replace the cross ram TBI? So what is it and does it have the L-98 aluminum heads?

Check for the engine temp sensor that goes to the computer, it's probably not working when the engine gets warm. A quick way to check is when the engine is warm and won't fire, if you shoot some starting fluid into the intake and it lights off, then that sensor is bad.
