Pull the axle ..........I suggest one at a time......fix one side ...then the other.....seeing as you have NEVER done this before.....

Once the axle is out......( you may need a axle puller ) ....you can see the seal.....just up the axle tube.......remove it and replace it ......but SOME 9 inch Ford axles have the seal built into the bearing.......then you will need to go to the machine shop and have new bearings ( with the seal in them ) installed

Above is a photo of a axle tube.......you can see the seal real good in the small bearing one.......

Bill, I pulled the axle seals in my 9" for the first time last year. I replaced both of them and of course the one that didn't leak now leaks. Go Figure! My axles came out with a good prying and tug. I pulled the seals out with the hook end of a pry bar. Just be careful that there is a lip that the seal is pushed in against and don't pull on that. I also found out that putting the seal back in nice and straight is very important. Find something that is almost the same od that you can use to tap it in. I put some non hardening sealer in against that lip so that hopefully it is a little insurance. Good Luck - Tom
