Changing color of a Lense
 
Do any of you guys know of a good (read easy) way to change a lense color from white (clear) to red? I want to convert a cargo light in my '67 PU to a third brake light.

I have bought some stained glass stuff from a hobby shop but in testing on a piece of plexiglass it looks like it will be hard to get an even coating.

How would a red blub in a clear lense look for a third brake light?

Any other ideas?

I think you could buy the prismatic lense material from one of the companies that sells LED lights, or an industrial plastic supply..

I bought it from one time from Lambert Ent, but I saw recently that they don't sell just the material anymore.

Clear lense + red bulb won't work well.

You could probably get the prismatic clear from an old light fixture and bond it to a peice of red plexiglass (like what those guys are selling.

I've taken tailight lenses and cut them down to fit cargo light...just have to find one to fit your needs and mark n cut so prisms are positioned properly.

Just replace the bulb with a red LED substitute.

At www.superbriteleds.com you will see many options for bulbs and complete assemblies for truck clearance lights that will work in your application.

Be advised, In most states, except for backup lamps and cargo's..it is Illegal to have white lenses to the rear..

We have a company here (and I think they are national) Called TAP plastics..you can walk in with a part, and your ideas, and punch one out for you in a few days..for a few bucks usually for small things..

OR cheaper yet, just buy a third brake lamp kit..

Whatever you end up doing, Be sure the third lamp has proper isolation from the turn-signals or you can end up with 4 ways every time you turn a corner..run your power wire to the brake lamp switch, NOT the light harness..

I know you've thought of this but dismissed it because it's 'ghetto' or 'just stupid'.
RATLLECAN IT!
You buy a translucent can of dark red/maroon spray paint and dust, DUST not paint the lens. You doa couple quick sweep to where the lens is dusted and you'll get your result. If you buy red translucent paint it will come out pink.
If you can't find translucent paint then just go with a red.
If you mess up you can just take it off right away with some paint thinner.
I've done this mor etimes than I can count wether it be on a faded lens, a clear lens, or a lens someone just wants darker.
A dusting of red rattlecan works perfect. Just take your time and wait for it to fully dry in between dustings and make sure you have no airbourne dust around.
IT WORKS and it's dirt cheap.

You want to be careful doing that...

Some paints and thinners will craze or cringe plastic , making the lenses obscure as a bathroom window...

I've done it before, with mixed results..usually if it works, it is "Off Color" and does not look right..but in my experience, most crazed (cheap plastic) and I ended up just tossing it and getting the right lenses..

I completely agree and you can mess up easy. How ever it does not look bad if you do it right. I link it to other painting and pinstriping. You have to know what your doing to begin with. I messed up ALLOT of lens doing this untill I perfected it. But if you have a spare lens, give it a shot. You'd be suprised when you don't rush it, let it dry correctly and test it.
it is IMPOSSIBLE to know what it will look like not in action. Do a couple dustings then put it on the car n test it and keep repeating. Most people look at it through the sun and think it's ok but on the car its totally different.
Remember a nice layer of dusting with a dark (dark) translucent red paint or a VERY light dusting of regular somewhat darker red paint. It's really easy to mess it up thats for sure, but do a dusting or 2 then install and repeat for guys like me on a budget it works everytime..... Ok well not everytime lol, but hey thats hotrodding for you, seeing what works on a budget. But it does work guys just go shade by shade and install after each application, you can even clear coat it inside which gives it a massive lens wide glow rather than a central bulb glow.

If you are going to do that...get "testors" model car paint. It is made for plastic. They have a candy apple red that a lot of guys use to "paint" the yellow/orange turn signal portion of the ford explorer lenses. Just DUST it like stated above. Don't go too dark with it.

DAM brian!! I never even thought of that lol. I have always rattlecanned but I love the can cuse it can be amazing when done right. I will keep in mind tho testors I never even thought of that.

There is also a product called "night shades" ($$$$$) that allows you to darken lenses. I don't know if it is legal for street use. Then again...I see smoke tinted tail light covers around here. :confused:

Personally, I don't want my tail lights dark.

You can buy a lens repair kit that will include an adhesive "tape" square or rectangle of plastic film to stick on the outside if the lens is smooth outside. CLean the lens very well and stick this stuff on there over sized so it is retained by the retainer ring or folded under the edge if no ring is used. If you're careful this will look good and last a couple or more years at a time.

Yeah well the general idea that the poster was looking at is making a clear taillihgt red.
The rule of thumb is if you have a hard time in the slightest bit seeing your brake lights in the daytime they are too dark.
There is allot of tailights out there that have the slightest shade of tint on them and the only thing you notice is how uniform the glow is rather than how prism'd it is.
Some guys like the dark shade to go with the black car, some guys like the super light tint dusting to uniform the lens into one glowing entity rather than a bulb induced section.
To each his own, I like my taillights as bright as they can get, but at the same I hate faded 'pink' taillights even more.
If your not sure what pink taillights look like, take a look at ALL dodge intrepids up to year 97 or 98 I believe (the first body style). Dodge messed up by using a a tint on the intrepid tailights that faded with any contact with the sun...like at ALL!
