changing from points to electron ingition

I would like to know how to change the ignition on a 1972 ford 390 , to electronic ignition. Can you us the distributer from a later model engine that is all ready equipped with electronic ignition? or do you need to change the guts of the original distributer, and if you need to , can you use the electronic module from a later model vehicle ( the vehicle is a 1979 ford pickup that I what to install the 390 in ). So if you folks can help me that would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can do it either way, factory ford stuff wich is great, or pertronix kit in you old dizzy. What kind of 79 do you have? I have a 79 f 150 short bed custom, 351/np435/np205 4in lift 35 MTs

The 79 pickup will have the DURASPARK II System. It is the correct one for retrofit.

The next schematic shows using a TFI (E-Coil) and gaining even more spark energy.
