Changing trailer tires
After spending most of the day today repairing my car trailer (still not done with it... Dang 'friends'), I got to thinking about changing all 4 tires. It has the trailer house axles with 5 bolt hubs. The closest that I can get the first tire to track is within a 1/8". It goes up and down the same amount. Is that about right? Or am I just begging for a rough ride and excess heat from it not tracking straight?

Thanks in advance, Chet.

Do you mean the tire surface moves up and down 1/8"? I don't know about trailer axles but comparing the 0.125" run out to a car with 0.040" or less seems like a lot to me - though I've never measured radial run out on a trailer before. Don't know if new tires will fix that as the run out might well be in the hubs or rims.

If the tires aren't worn out or dry rotted I'd try towing and evaluating before springing for new tires.

I got the new ones last late fall $80 for all 4, not bad, but they are the hollow center trailer housetype. Kind of a real pain to get right, so it seems. I was told by my dad that 1/8" is as close to perfect as I'll get, but that's only one opinion (I know I should respect his thoughts a bit more), but I figure a second opinion won't kill me.

Thanks, Chet.

One of the older independent tire stores here had a machine that would true up a tire like that. I think it just ground off the high spots. Might check around for a place with one of those.

Run out
Trade the wheels around to see if you may have a bent rim..???
Check the mounting surface to see that it is clean..??

All i can think of at this time..

mobile home tires
are you talking about mobile home tires & rims has a bolt or stud and a square wedge/washer that hold the rim to the hub??
if u do replace the hub Assembly to use a regular tire and rim
those mobile home things are a wreck that just hasn't happened yet
ps the life you save could be you own

Yeah Rob, it's those____ rims. Feel free to fill in the blank. I hate them. By the time I thought about changing the hubs over, I had two of the new ones on. :( Those 2 are as close as I am going to get to perfect. I will change them over to the other hubs as soon as I can, though. Thanks for the input guys.

In a while, Chet.
