Charging Problem
I started my '87 ElCamino the other night to pull it into the garage. I've been having a problem (?) getting the alternator to put out full voltage after it was started until the engine was revved. It performed fine after that...until the next start up. Anyway, as I was driving into the garage I saw the volt gauge was pegged as low as it could go.
This morning, I took the alternator to my nearby AutoZone and of course their tester was broken. I then picked up a used alternator at the junkyard. When I installed it, it charged 13+ volts and then drifted back to 12. I let the engine idle for a few seconds and when I checked the volt gauge (factory) it was pegged way down again. Anybody got any suggestions? I'd like to solve this as soon as possible. |

The battery is apparently charged and there's no problem starting it. All the connectors at the starter are tight and I've got the negative battery terminal grounded to the alternator brace and the inner fender, as it was stock. The engine is grounded to the firewall.
The only "appliances" are the radio, heater, and a/c. I'm going to check the "cleanliness" of the connections today. I'll let you know. |
