charging system trouble

i have a 1979 caprice with a good (tested) battery and brand new (now tested) alternator. the other day i gave my buddy a jump and he hooked up the cables backwards for about 1 second before i smacked him upside the head for it. that night my lights went very dim so im wondering whats burned up. what should i check? car runs and drives but only makes 12.2 volts even when running. alternator is new and tested as well as battery. are there any fuses that would stop my alternator from charging the battery? alternator light stays on now.

charging system trouble

jump a wire from hot terminal on alternator and to hot side of battery .
it should start to make the charging wine at the alternator .
fuse able link may have saved you .

Most likely you burnt a wire or a fusable link. Check everything. The above post has some good advice in it also.

If it is wired like my 79 pick-up
There are 2 fusible links down by the starter.

My volt meter did different things when one or the other went out

????does the radio come on?????-----this would be one link (ACCY)
????does the cigarette lighter work???---this would be the other link (BATT)
