You can get away with a bone stock shortblock for a few passes. The it goes BOOM.
I'd say, machine work and all, you could do a 355" shortblock with all forged parts for $1500 and have it live a long life. for a nitrous engine Larry |

nitrous is EVIL! go with a forced induction setup. you have to tune everything JUST RIGHT for a 300 shot. if you are off a few degrees with timing either way when that NOS hits your going to blow holes right through your pistons or shoot a rod through your oil pan. you need to make sure ALL of your clearances are just right and exact when building the motor also. i leave the 250, 300 and 500 shots to the pros. i was at the track one time with my buddy. he has a 72 nova with a built 350. he spent almost $10,000 just on the motor to have somebody build it for a 300 shot. took it to the track, was 5* retarded on the timing, took his run and when he came back the thing barely would run. when we pulled the heads the #2 piston had a quarter size hole in the top of it and the # 5... well... almost the whole top of the piston was gone. so, i hope you know what your doing... im not being a dick about this, but i just dont want to see you put money into that motor and have it burn up on ya. but if you decide to, i wish you luck

When running those amounts of nitrous Id recommend a progressive system. So instead of your engine seeing an extra 300hp instantly, it will space it out over a few seconds and take a lot of that sudden force load off the components. However that type of setup alone will run you many hundreds of dollars.

Run a two stage system, 150 & 150. Use the first at 3000 rpm then drop the other on top of it at 4500 rpm.
Run a good fuel system with a dedicated pump/regulator and a return line with a .055 orifice. as was stated, all forged internals. use a cam with 112-114 LSA a good ignition system stay away from the rev limiter. |
