What car? You need to have the codes read to nail it down, otherwise you're just guessing.

Call around to some of the major auto parts chain stores in your area. I know that Auto Zone and Auto Value will read you codes for free here.

Pull the codes your self. Cycle the key 3 times ---on-off-on--off-on without starting the engine. The Check engine light will come on and blink the codes. Chrysler cars will blink each code once. 55 is the "end of codes " code.

Example: 23 would be 2 blinks, a 2 second pause, 3 blinks, 5 second pause, next code.

Google the code or ask here.

Check Engine Light

You know, Check Engine light, could mean a lot of things or it could mean almost nothing. Some new Cars, now have the Check Engine light come on when the Odometer reaches the mileage for it's check up. Then there is the possibility that the Engine misfired, for what ever reason, (may be a piece of carbon got stuck in the spark plug and then go it's self UNSTUCK, and the Engine went back to running OK, this will set the Check Engine light on. Then it could be a bad connection in the wiring some were. There are just so many thing that could set the light to the on position. If you think the Engine is running just fine, and there is nothing that you can find wrong, then try this: Disconnect the battery and wait about three minutes and reconnect the battery, this Could turn the light off. Then if the light comes back on, I might even try it one more time. But then if it came on a third time I would get it checked out. But to me the check Engine Light is not always TRUE. Just some thing to try. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------GENE Neal

Well seems that if ya drive it from a cold start it stays off.But if ya shut it down warm then retsart it and drive it will come on within seconds.

A missfire won't set a missfire code on that, it's too old. A consistant miss will set a lean O2 code, but you'd notice that. Do the key cycle and get the codes. When the check engine light flashes "5-5", you are done, and all codes have been retrieved. Then post 'em. Also, write them down, in order, then clear them. This way you have an idea as to what codes there were, and which ones are "hard" faults.

I just had a starter problem about a week ago.Ya think all the turning the key on and off trying to get the electrical problem fingered out, coulda set a glitch in the puter??It took us three days of testing and trying things??
I know I did see the check engine light flash on and off several times during this excursion.

Just wondering...

I'm not trying to steal your thunder or anything 78Monte , but I was wondering how to check the "check engine light" on my car as well. I got an '85 Chevy Caprice Classic wagon 305 V8.

Please let me know. I'm just trying to get her back on the road again.

I doubt that this caused your light, but you basically did a code read at that time. The codes will still be there, they won't be cleared until you disconnect the battery.

_00000000_ under your dash should be a conector that looks like this.. the two _ are to represent the lil tabs on the connector, i always think of his as the bottom, take a paper clip and cross the uper right 2, the ones i have labled as "1" then turn your key to on and count the flashes, it will flash once 2 sec pause, then two more times, then long pause, that is 12 that lets you know the system is in diagnostic mode, i think gm flashes the code 2 or 3 times... when all codes are shown the code 12 will flash again and you are done, it will keep cycling untell you turn the car off and take out ur paper clip, good luck.
