Iam starting to setup my R&P and have some questions for you guys. I have my pinion support setup. Everything is new including the ring and pinion and pinion support itself. I put the support in a vice and checked it for run out with a dial indicator on the pinion snout bearing surface and I am getting .001 runout. Is it aceptable to have any runout at all here? This is on a new Yukon 3.89 R&P.

Preload is 19 to 20 inch pounds. I have a Yukon spacer in there for preload. I was checking my pattern last night and I have the pinion depth narrowed down but my pattern is moving from center on the coast towards the heel. The drive side looks pretty good and is towards the toe. My backlash is also going from .006 to .009 so something is not right. The Yukon instructions says BL should be from .006 to .010. Does that mean that it can vary from .006 ro .010 or it has to be the same all the way around. I will try and take some pictures tonight or this weekend.

The cheap Motive gear I just took out was easier to setup than this Yukon and had a really pretty pattern. This Yukon gear is being a pain. Also the Yukon does not have pinion depth or backlash etched on the gears.

Backlash can vary between these numbers, but should be the same once set (no runout). What center section are you using and do you know it's history? I once bought a Detroit locker (off E-Bay) from a NASCAR used parts reseller that had the bearing journals reground to a smaller size. The center section was not properly aligned prior to turning and my installer saw 0.020"+ runout when trying to set up the gears. BTW, they were quick to refund my $$$...

Its a brand new strange nodular case, brand new billet trac lock. I just had a Motive 3.90 in it and it did not do this. I swapped the Yukon pinion into another support with used bearings that I know are running straight and the pinion was wobbling .001". I tryed another old used pinion and it ran straight, no run out. This is crap....I guess I am going to have to send it back. I am pretty sure the pinion needs to spin dead straight. The old junk Ford pinion does.
