Checking Rod End Play

I'm building a motor and I've got a dial indicator, Hoe do I check rod end play on a bb chevy 361959. 2 bolt main, 2 piece seals. what should the tolerances be?

to check rod end play or side clearence just use a feeler gauge between the rods. You can use the dial indicator to check crank end play. Mount the indicator on the block and see how much the crank moves back and forth. About .007"-.011" on the crank. Side play on the rods depends on what kind of rods you got.

Checking Rod End Play

According to my BB chevy books the side clearance should be 0.015-0.025 minimum preferred per pair of rods.As far as crank end play goes the preferred minimum is 0.005-0.007,but I read a piece in the tech section of one of the car mags that said the wear spec by GM-the one used to determine if a part is junk or not-allows for up to 0.020.Hope this helps.
