Chemical dip for engine blocks

Hey guys hows it going,

Alright, I am trying to get my little foot in the door with engine building and and one of the things I want to do is have a 55 gallon drum to dip the blocks in myself(saves money). Well I have found myself a solid 55 gal good drum and I am now trying to figure out what kind of chemical?? I should go with for totally stripping the grease, grime, and paint of the blocks. And is it necessary to heat it or is that just for a faster cleaning. I am not really concerned for something that is safe for aluminum. I am willing to put a electric heating element in the tank if it is necessary but what I really want is a chemical that will do a good job at room temp. It is not like I am a busy bee so letting it soak for while is not a problem.

any info is appreciated!!

One thing you may want to consider and most DIY's are trying to save money, but a 55 gallon drum with enough solvent to eat paint, grease , etc. from the block is going to be rather costly. Brake cleaner does a good job, but for that amount would be cost prohibitive. Then you have the fire factor, what to do with the solvent when it gets old, how to dispose of it, and then you have to ask yourself how many blocks are you going to be doing a year. If it is only three or four, then it would be cheaper to have them hot tanked at a place that does it on a regular basis vs. buying all of that solvent. And three or four blocks being hot tanked would be cheaper. If your are going to be doing way more than that and going to be doing it for customers, then you have to figure that into the cost of the rebuild. And when you get the block back from being hot tanked, it is clean inside and out and ready to paint after a little wipedown. But then that's just my $.02 worth and you can't buy a darn thing with two Lincoln coppers nowadays.

This is what I came up with...might be a good way..

Seems to me to be cheap enough and I have most of what I need to try it..

That is definitely enlightening but not quite what I was looking for. Neat article Thanks.

I do plan to do more than a couple blocks a month.

I am wondering about non-flammable paint stripper from the local home depo??? I will allso be hot pressure washing after the dip.

I have herd from a friend that he used a 50 gallon drum a heater from a hot water heater and Red Devil lye and water and some heat will clean the block thoroughly. will eat any aluminum. will remove all paint and grease I believe. Ed ke6bnl

Castrol Super Clean may work pretty well. Believe it or not one of the best cleaners is heated automotive antifreeze. It may be your cheapest route also. If you choose to try it you need to heat it to about 200 degrees and it needs to be circulated, works wonders on aluminum too.

Kleen Flo carb and metal cleaner works well, but is expensive(and nasty fumes). B4 you go ahead, I'd look into the environmental requirements for this. Up here, all soak tanks have to be double walled, safteyed, ect., b4 you can use them. If you are doing this at home, and you need to heat the solvent, you may affect your homeowners insurance.

Well if you guys do your homework you may come up with something that uses a safe chemical and that works and does not bend the budget tooo bad.. So lets keep the discussion going and focus on parts cleaning..

Unless things have changed in the last few years I think the most common chemical used in hot tanks was Sodium Hydroxide but don't use this at home. Really nasty stuff and disposal presents problems.

I wonder how tsp (tri sodium phosphate) would do???

it'll suck the oils out of your skin, and remove any grease/oil stain from concrete..... I have no idea how it would affect aluminum or steel at all...... and i don't have any on hand to try out.....

As I was looking for cleaning stuff today I came across Zep industrial grade?? cleaner in 5 gal at the local homme depo. It says biodegradable.

The chemical we use was Oakite Dynadet. check www.oakite.com

Oakite Dynadet
Heavy-duty, alkaline immersion tank cleaner for removal of greasy, oily
and carbonaceous soils.
PRIMARY APPLICATlON
Oakite Dynadet is a powdered, heavy-duty, alkaline immersion tank cleaner that attacks and quickly removes
tough greasy and oily deposits, carbon, drawing compounds and some paint films. It also removes light rust
and brightens stainless steel.
Oakite Dynadet is dustless and easy to handle The soap-free material provides long solution life, rinses freely
and completely for thorough cleaning
Primary applications of Oakite Dynadet include the following:
1. To readily clean heavily pigmented drawing compounds from steel stampings.
2. To clean shop oil and grease from steel parts prior to electrocleaning, zinc plating or vitreous
enameling.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
To remove embedded grease, oil and light carbon from ferrous parts in the auto maintenance, railroad arid
petroleum industries: Use Oakite Dynadet at 75 to 20 g/l (10 to 16 oz/gal), 71 to 82C (160 to 180F).
Rinse thoroughly.
To remove heavy soils such as drawing compounds, grease and oils from parts or to preclean steel parts
prior to vitreous enameling or electrocleaning: Use Oakite Dynadet up to 120 g/l (16 oz/gal), 60 to 82C
(140 to 180F). Rinse thoroughly.
Solution Control: Concentrations are titrated using Test Kit Procedure 121. For free and total alkali, use
Test Kit Procedure 123.
NOTES ON USE
(See Material Safety Data Sheet)
Steel tanks and heating coils are acceptable
Dynadet cannot be used on food contact surfaces.
Safety and Handling Precautions: Oakite Dynadet is a highly alkaline industrial product. Direct contact
causes burns of eyes and skin. It is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and
clothing. Wear rubber gloves, safety goggles or face shield and suitable protective clothing when handling dry
powder or solutions. Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid breathing dust or mist. Use with adequate
ventilation. Do not take internally.
When preparing new solutions or adding to existing ones, slowly sprinkle product over surface of solution
while stirring to avoid violent spattering. Do not add large amounts of dry powder to solution at any one time.
Do not add to hot water or solution warmer than 43 to 49C (110F to 120F).
First aid in case of contact : Immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
Get medical attention. For skin, remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash them before reuse. If
swallowed, wash out mouth thoroughly with water. Give several glasses of water to drink. Contact a
physician immediately.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
DISPOSAL
(See Material Safety Data Sheet)
Dispose of according to all federal, state and local regulations.

May be shipped by any common carrier. Freight classification is "Corrosive Solid, NOS, (Sodium Hydroxide,
Mixture), UN 1759, Cleaning Compound. Product Code No: 4050.

Hot water and trisodium followed by the electrolysis bath sounds good to me..Maybe take a pressure washer to the parts to get the big grungies off first..

None of that sodium hydroxide deal for me..
