-Chev sb 6-71 blower & 2 4 barrel carb

Hello fellow Hot Rodders. I have a tech question. Can I install a 6-71 blower with 2-4 barrel carbs on a stock 1964 Chev 283 sc engine, or will the engine be unable to handle the extre stress and breakdown. THX, Marty.

A 6-71 will be too big for that 283. A 142 with a single four barrel carb would be a much better choice. How is the operating condition of the engine? Have you done a compression test on it?

The short answer is yes you can.
Is is a good idea? No
Would I do it? No

But, it all boils down to what you want to do with it. If you plan on running any boost, it will not last long.

If you want it for looks, then under drive the hell out of it and hope for the best.

There area few more steps involved than just bolting it on.
I'm not trying to insult you, just saying.

Chev 283 6-71 blower.

I want to replace the engine in the winter. It snows up here for 6 months!!!! Should I purchase a used sb Chev motor with a 6-71 blower, carb or fuel injection system motor already assembled. May be and ex drag race motor, and save all the work of buiding up my 50 year old, 283 sb. THX, Marty.

Yes the 671 will work on your 283. The key is to not get stupid with the boost.
( blower pulley drive ratio)

You will need a blower friendly cam for it.
Summit cam #k1105
get the suumit valve springs too.

two 500cfm or 600cfm edelbrock carbs
You will need to underdrive the blower.
keep the max boost to 5psi.
The blower drive ratio/boost/cid info on the BDS blowers site will help you get it right.

download and read the Wieand blower instructions too.

The distributor needs to be recurved limit the max advance to around 28-30deg under boost @WOT.

Premimum pump gas, if auto trans get a 10" 3500stall and some 4.10's

It will scream and willl last a long long time with modest low blower boost.

You will need to improve the car's fuel system capacity.

A weiand 142 blower and 750cfm carb will work very well too.
The 283 engine build plan is the same. Again keep the boost reasonable on a stock motor. The stock motor will be fine with modest boost.
The default 142 blower top pulley will need to be tamed a bit for the 283
if you go that way.

If you prefer a cool street strip mechanical blower cam for your blown 283
use Lunati cam #401A3LUN 4 speed and 4.10 or 3500stall and 4.10 if auto trans. If its a Power glide get th350.

You can improve your stock 283 heads with porting and larger 1.94 valve or do up a set of the 350HO #4416 heads with larger valves and judicious home porting. Anything you do to improve the heads is a + for blower power.
The lower the engine compression ratio the better.

Low compression ratio allows more blower boost and power on pump gas.

Using a large chamber 76cc head on your 283 will allow you to run more blower boost 7 to 10psi. serious power.

Thanks for your help, fellow Hot Rodders. I am noy going to spend money on the 283 motor. It is an old and tired motor. You can buy a new complete crate 350 sb for $3,000.00. That will be fine for this 64 Impala. It is a cruiser not drag car. So I am going to keep it as a cruiser, paint it up, and have fun. 4 door sedan Impala's are cool for picking up chicks, and Banging chicks. If I want speed I'll buy a Pro Stock, and put it on the street. Cheers, and No worries. Marty#*!$$$

right on f-bird. nothing wrong with a good ole 283. anybody recall grumpy jenkins in prostock once said the 283 was the best engine chevy ever made. and remember they all had steel cranks also.

Ditto! Back in 1970 I ran a '55 Chevy 2dr sdn gasser with a well built, normally aspirated 283 with 1.94 heads and it ran in the 12's consistently. Wound 6500 rpm's, and seemed to want to go even higher. Great motor!

When I was a die-hard Chevy guy the 283 was the engine of choice. Lots of them are still finding their way into traditional styled hot rods for good reason... cheap, easy on gas and reliable. In a light can they go like stink.

That said, I'd buy a good used SBC or a rebuilt rather than spending $3K on a new crate motor. If you're just cursing you'll be $1,500 ahead with a rebuilt.
