chevelle axle codes

I looked for axle codes on my friends chevell to see what kind of gears came in it but i couldnt find it. I thought it would be on the passenger side axle tube facing forward. I took a knife and scraped most of the dirt off (must have been an inch thick) but still couldnt find it. If anyone knows where i should look and a site that has the the decoded codes that would be very helpful. any help is appreciated.

It's usually a few inches out from the center section, and it might be toward the top of the tube. Scrape the major crud off, then shoot what's left with WD-40. Wipe it real hard with a rag until it's clean, then get up in there with a flashlight. It's not stamped real hard, so it's easy to miss.

Don't assume the code on the outside matches the gears on the inside after 30-some-odd years. They might not be original.

chevelle axle codes

so it is going to be stamped. but my gear code lokes like it was cast into the axle tube itself. is that odd?
