Chevelle electrical problem

I just picked up a 69 chevelle parts car with a V8. I'm trying to get it running, but having no luck. When I turn key on the dummy lights come on, but when I try to start it the starter doesn't engage and I lose all power. I put a charger on battery and it says it's completely dead. I let it recharge and try again with the same result. I thought it may be the starter so I replaced it, but same thing happened. I take the supposedly dead battery out and put it back in the car it came from and it fires right up. I guess theres some type of electrical problem, but I don't want to spend lots of time or money to solve it. Is there some way to bypass the electrical system in the car and just start it? Thanks for any help.

check cables and apply power to the s terminal

check youre cables for corrossion.if thay are repace them.To check the starter battery + main wire to the starter should be good and ground should be equily as good ( a good jumpper cable set will be a good subsitute for a quick check between a good battery and youre starter)then apply the 12v + side to the +postive side of the battery and the jump it to the s terminal (small starter termanl hook up)and it should turn over.hop this helps. fohldmon

Check the neutral safety switch (automatic)

Starter Solonoid--have you changed that? or checked

You can bypass the ignition switch by:

Car in park---ignition switch on---E-Brake on---jump the batt term to "S" terminal on the starter solonoid. This can be done with an insulated screwdriver.

Or run a wire from the pos battery to the terminal marked "s" on the solonoid.

Being a 69--the ignition switch may be out of adjustment not allowing the contacts to the solonoid to make a connection.

Terminal "S" on the starter should be a purple wire (if the wiring has not been molested)

Doc here,

First of all, replace or repair the circuit protection circuit in that charger..It sounds like it went south for the winter..

Does any electrical work at all? Could be an open fuse link or amp meter shunt..(if so provided) ...

Could be a burned "Hot in Start " contact also on the ignition switch..

To bypass, get a remote starter, ( also referred to as a screw driver..you didn't hear that here..) connect or bridge the Big cable terminal on the solenoid to the "S" terminal (closest to the block) on the solenoid for a second , if using a screwdriver..EXPECT a BIG spark..normal, but don't jump and smash your head..when it happens.

If the engine turns a little as you tap it..you are good to go there..

NEXT, run a jumper to the Coil "{BATT" ) for HEI, or + for remote coil, be sure the car is in neutral or park and CAN NOT move if the engine starts, and hit the starter "S" to Battery again, it should fire and run..to shut it off you must remove the coil jumper..

If that works, and you actually want to fix it , start at the "S" wire, follow that back to the Neutral safety switch, at that switch, test with your DVOM , DCV, V X 50 or autorange, have a partner "HOLD" the key in start..

if you have 12 volts on one side of the switch but not on the other, check the mechanical adjustment, If good , replace the switch....

If no power on either side..follow it back further..

If you have a Clutch, it may have a clutch over ride on the pedal, perform the same test as with the N/S switch..

If power on one side only check adjustment, if good, replace the switch, If power on both sides..check the WIRE between the switches. If power on one side only..follow it back to the column plug at the steering column..check the connections..if good check / replace the ignition switch..

All mostly labor, few parts...I understand this was a parts car..
