SS chevelle speedometer repair

Hey Gang
On my 1972 chevelle I am replacing a column shift speedometer ( which works and is quite) to a floor shift speedometer ( that works but is noisy). Can I take the face off the floor shift and put it on the column shift? If so what is the procedure. I don't know how to take the speedometer hand off without damage. Please tell me each step that I need to take........thank you...........jerry

PS... is there a way to lubricate the noisy one to eliminate the noise?

PSS....is this the forum for asking this type question........or is there one better?

Stinky,

I reread your question a couple times before I think I understand. The floor shift model doesn't have the window for the drive selector...right?

Anyway, the mechanisms inside both should be the same. You can remove the speedo hand by pulling evenly on it. It's just a press-on fit. You can just swap the insides. I'd recommend setting them side-by-side during the swap.

DO NOT try to clean the faceplate with a liquid cleaner. The numbers will disappear. Trust me on this one.

you are correct with your question. I am swapping out my column shift speedo (with transmission gear select window) for a floor shift speedo (no window). I am putting in a floor shifter.

Thanks for the info.....I didn't want to just start yanking stuff off without first knowing how it is supposed to come off...jerry
