Not sure about the '61 409 ratings.

In '62 I think the ratings were 380 for the hipo single four. I know it was 409hp for the hipo dual four.

In '63-'64 the ratings were 400 and 425 horsies.

In '65 they only offered the 400hp single four engine... and only early in the year, until the 396 became available.

I guess my 63 was the 400 hp then. I have pictures of the engine bay and it had a large dual snorkel chrome air cleaner that does not appear to be after market.
If you haven't seen some of my older posts and threads you may not know that the reason my memory is vague is because I am recovering from a heart attack followed within a few weeks by three strokes. I was paralized, blind and had total memory loss. My younger brother, who also is a life long gearhead, is my source of info on the many cars I have owned and I took good pictures of most of them. I will be traveling to Ohio in April to land speed race on the Ohio Mile with a goal of trying to set three landspeed records! Still have lots of problems but I am recovering well.

Garrell, Don't feel bad. I can't remember many things... and that is without serious health issues making it worse! :-(

TusanJay, Oh I am thankful to be here every day I am a walking miracle and proud of it. Two things I always say when I tell my recovery storey:

1- I owe my recovery to God, my Wife and my love of cars.
2- I learn at least one tging new each day.

Besides the rigorous therapy exercizes I developed and spend two hours doing each day for the mental stimulation I read thirteen car magazines, at least two books, three gun magazines, my Bible and watch hours of CNN, Fox business news etc. Because of severe, chronic pain I sleep very little, I do not even go to bed I spend each night in the den reading, on the internet, and watching any form of racing I can find and record.

Need more pics of that car Unix!!! Looks like your set up for 1/4 mile any time slips? Hows that electric motor running the water pump working out? I bought one and its on my shelf, Im debating whether to use it or not Give a little info on the blue print!

I was at Detroit drag way racing on a friday night In the mid 60s (my father and I) I was on leave and figured we would bring the 409 out and do some tune up runs (I ran my 409 and he ran a 63 olds supper 88)

Any way I wasnt getting much weight transfer to my rear tires and my slicks were just burning away off the line so I moved the rear springs up to the top holes on my rear shackles (My shackles were about 14 inches long with 5 or 6 holes on each side) so I had a lot of shackle hanging down!!! My Dad came over and gave me a liquid some guy loaned him in the pits he told my Dad to wet a rag with the sticky liquid before we went out & wipe it on my tires after the burn out. Before staging he did just that (remember these were tune up runs) When I left the line at about 4000 rpm as usual ,my front end came up higher then ever before NOT AS USUAL (I usually only pulled the front right tire Off the ground) my shackles hit the track HARD and threw me into the other lane!!! When I got it under control & shut down, My legs were shacking so bad that my knees were knocking I had one bent ladder bar and one pair of destroyed shackle and a cocked rear housing so I thought I got Off pretty easy! When I was waiting for the tow truck I turned around and there was a crowd staring down at the track about 20 to 30 feet past the starting line! I walked over and saw a big gash cut into the lane (looked like a canyon )!! The track officials wanted to see me when I got things squared away with the car. While I was in the pits ,They were moving the starting line forward to good pavement! Anyway I was banned from the dragway for two years and had to pay damages!!! The reason I had to pay damages to the track was because they wanted to know what was wiped on the tires! People in the pits told the officials they saw it being done!!!
So my father being an honest man gave them the rag the guy that gave him the stuff was long gone! ends up the stuff was liquid rosin and other chemicals and ends up I broke a lot of track rules!!

I took my punishment and paid damages (Or they wouldnt let me race there again) And when my leave was over went back to French Indo china!! For 2 years , so the ban didnt bother me much!!

Whats really funny about this is My Dad didnt get in trouble and was able to race all weekend and every week end after that!!! While I went home On cruise night thou I was the big man everyone was telling me how cool it was !

I think if My Dad was alive today and he saw the man that gave him that stuff even at 102 yrs. old hed kick his *****

I had a 63 409/425, wish I could drive it today as that would mean I was rich. That car got a whole 4 mpg, on the highway. Someone posted, didn't the 409 have 2 fours, I think only the 425 h.p. and z-11 did, but I could be wrong.

Fun car back in the 60's, but when the Dodges started to beat me at the strip, had to trade it in for a 68 Charger.

I may be wrong but I think the 425 hp engine was two fours and the 340 and 400 single carbs.
