Talking Chevrolet 8.5" 10 Bolt

I am upgrading my 1976 Monte Carlo 10 Bolt Rear-end to a Posi with 3.73 gears. After a little research I have discovered that this rear-end was the "Universal" rear-end for millions of GM cars from 1971 - 1996.

My question is: Does anyone know whether the Monte's came with a 28 or 30 Spline Differential ?
I want to order the Posi, Gears and Rebuild kit before we put the rear-end together. Thanks for the help.

Joe

I do belive that the monte SS's came with the 28 sline....I am in the process of rebuilding an 86 monte ss....with a friend of mine....we found a web page that would be great for you to check out montecarloss.com they pretty much know everything about monte's.....good luck with the rear end change we just bought a 8.5 10 bolt as well but it came with 4:11's in it....but I have not installed it yet so....what I do know for sure is your going to have to either shorten your drive shaft or purchase a shorter one.....Mike

Don't make a mistake. Pull your axle and count them. I don't know which count you have, but I can tell you that the 7.5" came with different counts for different applications so it is possible that GM may have used different counts in you rearend type. The practice will do you good and it can be done in 10 minutes.
