You have a real good chance of putting together a 1987 S-10 with the performance of a stock 1957 chevy station wagon, or worse.

You need to provide us with the following:
Budget
What do you want to do with this thing? Just drive it or drag race?
Casting numbers/ part numbers on heads, pistons, what intake, and carb you intend to use
Experience level

Generally, "350" heads are too large for a 283. MOST 283s are happy with 58cc chambers and 170 runners
That powerglide is a slug for a street car; you need more 'gears' to help the engine make torque off the bottom to pick your truck up and move it. a TH350 or TH200-4r/ TH700-R4 is MUCH better for what you're doing most likely. You need 3.73 rear gears or MORE to get a performance oriented 283 to make power. Heres a basic recipe:
262H is a good cam to start with, with 3.70 gears and say rebuilt 305HO heads, with flat top pistons and proper head gaskets. a 650 carb would be fine, on a performer RPM intake. This will not win a lot of races, but it'll rev nicely, sound good and in a light car its a fine cruiser.
Or you could buy a vortec crate motor (longblock); add a vortec intake and a 650 carb and beat this 283 to death

ok very little money just lookin to do a stock rebuild on the bottom end maybe alil bigger cam to match the heads & intake but it would most likely be stock 350 heads & intake just a daily driver dnt really need alot of power just dont really want to keep the 4cylinder thats in the truck never planing on drag racing just want to say it has a v8

If that's your purpose & power is not you goal, you would be just as well to cleanup & redo the 283 heads, especially if they are the powerpak heads, with a 650 carb & headers w/ a good exhaust. If you need a set of heads, the 305 HO heads would work better.350 heads are gonna need machine work to work properly & not shroud the valves. If the 283 is all you have to work with,or,it's just what you wanna do,then by all means go ahead. If however, you are thinking it will fit the S10 better due to size,it won't.Any SBC engine is gonna take up the same space,a 305,307,350,or,stroker 383 will just as easy to adapt.

the cheapest way would be to find a running complete 350, and the trans from a 4.3L S10, preferably auto as they last longer.

you can buy a running 350 for less than $500, you can't rebuild a 283 for that. try to sell the 283 or even just cash it is for scrap value.

Just because you have parts on hand does NOT mean they are worth using or that they are the cheaper route to go- often its just the opposite.

ok my original point

so if the 350 heads wont work but 305 will if i had a set of 305 stiock heads what whould the power be & what would be a wild guess on what i could exp[ect for mpg even if the 283 isnt the best choice nor the cheapest to go in the truck thank you

Depending on which 350 heads you have, will determine how much work would be needed. You may be able to do some swapping with somebody looking for a set.Your intakes will be OK as long as you don't get Vortec heads.305 heads are easy to come by & usually fairly cheap.Call around to some shops.Alotta times you can find a rebuilt set that were never picked up for the cost of the rebuild. You also may find someone who needs a 283 for a specific era/model that would do some trading,or,buy it so you could get you better suited motor for your app.The 283 is a good engine ,but,I think by the time you get it all together, your gonna have alotta money tied up in less performance & durability.

The powerglide is going to kill your around town mileage and you never told us what rear axle ratio you have. Powerglides have no overdrive and only low and high gear. This transmission was a great trans, for specific applications; but because it doesn't have a deep 1st gear, it makes your engine work harder to move from a stop. Also, without overdrive, no mileage help there either.

I say sell what you have and look for a 305 or 350 with 700r4 from a 2wd pick up truck or station wagon etc.
