you can usually bore a 283 to 040 with no problem. check your heads to see if they are small chamber, port match your heads and intake put a set of headers on it with a decent cam. i know the 302 chevys used a .485 lift cam with 346 duration but that big of a cam might make that little 283 run like a toilet.your best bet is to talk to a cam guy that knows his stuff.check the cast# on the block if it is 3790721 then you can bore that puppy to 0.155 over.or just .125 and use 350 pistons and build a 302.if you chose not to bore it out then the biggest valves you can use with out hitting the cylinder walls is 1.94.but,the 283 can rev like no tomorrow but the small bore kind of limits your options.i still have a 283 punched 030 with 12-1 forged TRWs sitting on my deck waiting for the right boat to put it in.
Foot to the floor, hair back, knuckles white.
