Chevy 3-speed overdrive
 
A buddy has picked up one of these and wants to put it in his 64 Chev pickup. It has a lever and some sort of electrical connection that are involved with the overdrive. I havent seen it yet so dont know the specifics.
Anyone know of a good web source of info on these things?

Its probably an R-10 OD unit. The big ford motors used the R-11. R-7s were the late 40s, early 50s versions. Very good streeter trans. I dont have any of the OD parts, but if he needs 'soft' parts for the gearbox; I've got some left, just PM me.

Thats actually the better of the OD designs, over the Gear Vendors 'Laycock' design

Need to figure out if its 6 or 12 v, I would imagine.

I got a look at it and appears to be a Saginaw three speed trans main case. The governor is broke but the solenoid is intact but functionality is unknown.

All of the Chevy 3-speed transmissions with the 4-bolt side covers are actually Muncie transmissions produced from 1940 to 1965.

The first of the Chevy 3 speed OD transmissions came out in 1955 and it was a 12 volt car. Pontiac and the Chevy 3100 and GMC 100 series trucks were using the same transmission. There were four different gear combinations in them and the OD unit gave a 24% step up in output. Parts are available even today.

O/ D parts
 
Overdrive solenoids are pricy today, If yours doesn't work you can pull it apart and check the wireing connections, I usually see damaged wiring right at the grommet. and check out the contact points, they can be carefully filed like doing an old voltage regulator, At one time I made a manual shift lever to operate the pawl, when I couldn't find a good solenoid.
