Well, being that you said stock gen 1 w/76 cc heads I'm going to assume you want to save some coin. I'm also assuming a TH350 trans w/stock converter and stock rear gears.
A decent rebuild of a 350 with a hydraulic flat tappet Comp Cams 260HE cam, 0.030 over flat top hyper pistons w/2 valve relief(5cc), bored/decked block w/pistons at zero deck, 0.039" gasket, heads w/1.94/1.50 valves w/pocket porting, and Z28 type springs(assuming thats what you have),(should yield about 9.1:1 static comp. ratio, 7.75:1 dynamic CR)(ok for 87 octane gas), a performer type dual plane intake, 600cfm vac secondary Holley, HEI type distributor and pretty much stock everything else should make for over 300 trouble free horse power, good truck low end torque and throttle response and not break the bank.IMHO
PS I have a 260 cam in a 350 and it runs great, 1st is almost a waste of gas as it spins so much with a 3.73 rear end.
