Straight up = Installed with no/0* additional advance/Retard.
Most Aftermarket Timing Gear/Chain sets have 3-setting positions on the Crank Gear, 4*Retarded, 0* and 4* Advance for the Valve Timing. The Cam Gear can also be adjusted with Bushings in smaller (*= Degree) increments.
