Chevy 350 small block type.
Hey guys.
I just bought an 80 El Camino. These did not come with 350's, only V-6 and 305. The gentleman I bought it from knew nothing about the motor. Though strong, I need to know if there is a way to track the type of motor by a number stamped on it. What I'm looking for is whether it's a 2 or 4 bolt, what year it was made and that should lead me to the H.P. it had from the factory. It would be a bonus if I found out the pistons size too, if anyone thinks they could push me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks Darrin

the '80 305 sbc was rated at around 145-155 hp, There were NO 4 bolt main 305's....now I'm sure somebody will come on here and say "hey, I,ve got a 4 bolt 305" !!! For a lot of real info just google 305 chevy horse power specs.

Look on the machined surface just in front of the passenger side head when looking straight down and you should see the VIN suffix code.The last 2 or 3 letters will give some info. Also look at the driver side rear of the bellhousing mounting surface behind the driver side head for the casting number.

Ok you're right, my info was from "Chevy High Performance" mag. I was just refering to his El Camino having a factory 305 4 bolt, don't consider it a "heavy duty truck" ....but you are correct.
