Chevy 454

I was looking at my friends 454 heads and noticed they are wider, taller and just more massive compared to pontiac 6x heads (6x heads can be used on a 455). Why is this? Are the chevy heads bigger because of bigger chambers and more cooling jackets? bt

No, 6X heads are Pontiac heads and they don't fit Chevy. 6X is a Pontiac casting number

Besides the BBC being a rugged, large engine suitable for big truck use, BBC heads do not have the valves all in a row like the Pontiac or SBC. This adds width between the intake and exhaust flanges. And they DO have large chambers, at least some of them, and same w/the cooling jackets.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the valves are staggered to allow for a "canted valve" design.

As you can see in Cobalts picture, the valve stems are not perpendicular to the engine block. This allows a little more elbow room between one valve closing and the other one opening. This, in turn, allows for larger valve head diameters and better breathing.

This same "canted valve" geometry was used by Ford on their Boss 302 and Cleveland engines.
