They both have the same ports. the difference is the combustion chamber the 461 has a 64 CC chamber and the 462 has a 68CC chamber, I would not use either unless I had them and the guides were in good shape if I had to buy a set get the SR torker from Dart they make good power for less than puting valve guides and screw in studs/guide plates in the 461/2 heads.

Very unlikely.
300hp is easily achieved with stock heads.
400 maybe, MAYBE, with some very serious porting and valve work, on a good day.
For 500hp, you'll need some aftermarket big port heads and carefull selection of the cam and pistons.

I would be curious to know the specs of the build and see the dyno sheet.

Agreed ^^^

Getting stock heads into the 500hp range usually requires twice as much as the cost of aftermarket heads. Its possible, but it would be pretty foolish to waste money like that.

the 461 has a 64cc chamber & the 462 has a 68cc chamber. the 461x has a little bigger intake port (170 v/s 160) & the 041x has a 68cc chamber with a 170cc runner. with 2.02-1.6 valves & the right valve job & a little bowl blending you should be able to get 400-450 horespower out of any of them.

Can you give me a source for the chamber volumes of 68cc for the 462 and 041 heads? Everything I've seen has them at 64cc.

honestly i don't remember where i seen or heard that. you can look & see the difference. they are a different size. a buddy of mine ran dirt track for years & was also a machinist. i seen him angle mill a 461 & a 186 & ran them on the same engine. maybe he told me that they were 64 & 68 . the 461 might be a 58cc & the others 64cc.

461 and 462 heads have different chamber sizes for the different valve sizes originally installed in them. The 2.02/1.60 heads had AROUND 64cc while the 1.94/1.50 heads had AROUND 58cc. The best thing to do is to cc any head that you have so you know EXACTLY what you are dealing with. Published specs can be way off.

Especially when the configuration you're interested in occurs over an 18 (or so) inch length and is the product of sand casting technology. Good sand castings for their time, I agree, but there was never any attempt I've noticed to machine to balance-out the chamber volumes.

i have never seen a 461 or 462 casting that was stock, less than 64cc, i have a virgin set of 041 in the shop right now and they are 66cc. from what i have seen over the years these heads range from 64 to 67 cc
