all my gears work except for the over drive and the speedometer works fine, any ideas ?

You answered some of the questions.

I've done the transmission thing for decades, first shop owned in 1981...

Since I do not know what year this vehicle is I'll guess;

A C3500 is some where around a 1 ton rated vehicle. Have you looked at the trans pan shape? Is it rectangle with 16 bolts?

GM did not normally install the 4L60E trans into a 1 ton rated vehicle... maybe they did on this one?

Sorry the year 1991 I think that it is a 4L60E because the linkage in my Chilton book maches thst tranny not the THM400 or THM700R4. Yes I believe that the pan is retangle I will have to look on Monday
