I'm wanting to build an engine to race.
I'm leaning toward the BB 427 4 bolt main/blown/roller cam/lifters, etc...
Can anyone tell me why I would want a 427 over a 454 or does it really matter?
:boxing:
Other than finding a 427 that isn't already decked out..... :smash:
The 454 and the 427 BBC's are the same exact thing except the crankshaft and the pistons......SO THERE IS NO PARTS ADVANTAGE..... with either one....
Aftermarket sources have plenty of both.....
What kind of racing is planned ?
Bracket or class ?
If you are going to bracket race or just do the " Run what you brung " deal.....the larger the engine....the better as a general rule.
If you are racing in a inches to weight class......I would go with the 427.
I have owned both. I had a LS-6 Chevelle....a 69 Nova SS BBC that I put a LS-6 in and so forth...
For a street race car......I prefer a 427 also.....easier to HOOK UP and turns more RPM on the big end......

It was dangerous 20-30 years ago when I did it and it is even MORE dangerous now...
If you can afford it, World Produtcs has a 600hp 454 Small Block. You'd have the cubes and lots of power all in a convenient small block package. If I had $12,000 I'd get myself one.
$12,000 for 600hp? Sounds a little expensive to me. I have a stock 402BB chevy that is to receive AFR heads and a solid roller cam that should make 643hp @6500 and I'll have about $5000 tied up in it all said and done. How is that not a better deal?
didn't we already have 2 or 3 of these threads? i know 1 of them was a pole. i think it was by k-formula
