Chevy C20 Engine/Tranny conversion

1972 Chevy C20....250 straight six...Manual 4 speed tranny with granny low....I am wanting to put a 350 V8 in and I was going to change the rear end gears because they are 4.57's and i need some more speed....so im not going to change the rear end or the gears...so im going to have to put a 5 speed in it out of a S10 or a Camaro....how hard will this be?...or maybe a 6 speed?

V8 mounts are easy to come by nowadays (the frame mounts are different from the straight-6). You'll have to get a trans crossmember, because the SM465/etc. mount from the bellhousing...no actual trans mount. C20's have two driveshafts, the first one will have to be cut-down (the V8 will actually move the original trans forward a couple/few inches, compared to the 6). Depending on what type of clutch system you use, it shouldn't take much to mod what you have (for linkage), or running clutch-master/slave (hydraulic). Fun/easy project, to say the least. Lots of room to work under there.

P.S. If I remember correctly, there's like 8 or 10 bolts (maybe a couple more) holding the front-clip (hood/fenders/grill) on. After unbolting it two people should be able to carry it off. The C20 I had, had 4 engine swaps. So I removed the front clip each time (using the engine hoist and some rope since I worked by myself). Makes it a LOT easier to work on.

S10 5 speed won't bolt up to a 350 without an adapter and even then, its only rated for 225 lb ft torque. it will die very quickly. the camaro 5 speed should be fine behind a mild 350. should bolt right up to the original belhousing
