Chevy Carrier Series

A friend has a posi Chevy carrier. He believes it's a 3-series because the flange (for lack of a better term) that the ring gear bolts to is the same thickness as a 3.73 rear he has.

How can you determine which series you have? Casting #? Some other method?

If its an 8.5" 10 bolt clutch posi, it will have big numbers cast on it either 888 or 999. 888 is for 2.73 and up, 999 is for less than 2.73

Some of the 8.5" carriers have 410409 or 410408 cast into them. The -408 is series 3 (for 2.73 & higher ratios), and the -409 is series 2.
