Chevy casting manuf. date numbers

Can anyone tell me where to find information on '57 chevy 283 casting manuf. date numbers, or how to interpet the casting dates? Does the letters start with A for Jan. etc.?

Yes, they start with "A" and continue, except for "I". The next digit(s) should be the day and the last digit(s) are the year.

I'm into Pontiacs, but I think Chevy does it the same. Usually four digits, starting with a letter. It's like you said, A for January, B for February, etc. The next two digits are for the day of the month. (if there are only two numbers after the letter, the first would be the date) the last number would be the last number of the year. If Chevy did everything like Pontiac, if the first letter is a G (July) or later, it would have been manufactured for the next model year. ala, G167 would have been a 58, 68, or 78 etc.
Hope this doesn't confuse you too much and I hope it helps.
