I'm into Pontiacs, but I think Chevy does it the same. Usually four digits, starting with a letter. It's like you said, A for January, B for February, etc. The next two digits are for the day of the month. (if there are only two numbers after the letter, the first would be the date) the last number would be the last number of the year. If Chevy did everything like Pontiac, if the first letter is a G (July) or later, it would have been manufactured for the next model year. ala, G167 would have been a 58, 68, or 78 etc.
