Chevy ECM ALDL question

The "Service engine soon" light came on while driving my 1987 Chevy G20 van. It uses the AC Delco 1227747 ECM. As per instructions, I put a paper clip in slots A/B of the ALDL connector under the dash to review the diagnostic codes.
After I did so, the SES light no longer comes on, even on start up.
The bulb is OK.
The engine runs fine.
How do I know if the computer is still working properly???
Checked all fuses too.
thanks,
mark

ecm aldl

when you ground the a/b pins you should have the key in the on posistion and if there is nothing wrong you should get a code 12(blink,pause, blink blink) . If you dont get a code 12 you have to go to the next step. I have seen ecms do this and sometimes the only way to get the codes outare with a scanner. hope this helps.
