chevy L6 261

I'm in high school and have a '49 3/4 ton chevy pickup with a 216 in it. It struggles at highway speeds and I hate it how the honda civic in the next lane can smoke me.
Everyone has a 350 or a 383 and I want to keep the old truck look to it...
So I was wondering how a 261 would perform with a 2 or 3 carb intake, mild cam, increased compression, headers, and some other little do-dads?
I'm shooting for a reliable daily driver, but enough power to turn some heads

A 292 GMC would make that thing run......here's a couple of websites devoted strickly to ...well inliners. www.stoveboltengineco.com and www.inlinersinternational.org. If you google inline chevy or anything like that you will see all kinds of stuff related.
