A friend of mine has a 12 second s10.
It has a sb400 backed up with a TH700R4.
The V6 S10's came with that trans, but it IS beefed up a little ;-)

The 700 has overdrive too. That is one of the things I liked about the s10 I had way back when, although the 2.8 wasn't much of an engine.

If you want to go manual. get a 96-up S10 4.3 4x4 tranny from like a ZR2, aka NV3500. Mines taken a pounding for 4 years. As for auto? I don't know.

You have a LOT of options available to you having to start from scratch.
Manual or automatic?

Overdrive or not?

Stock or stronger than stock?

Stock automatics were TH-700R4, followed by the same thing only renamed to 4L60, then replaced by the electronically controlled 4L60E.

Manuals went from Borg-Warner 4-speed, to a Borg-Warner 5-speed (T-5), NVG-1500, NVG-3500, and maybe a couple others over the years.

You can change it from automatic to standard, or the other way around, just by searching junkyards if you choose to go this route.
