Chevy SB Starter question

The last post "won't crank anymore" has developed a new question for a newbie like myself. The starter did not engage the flywheel completely. I shimmed it down and can see that the bendix gear will fit into the flywheel teeth. While looking at this, I noticed a bushing looking part on what I'm calling the bendix shaft, which is the shaft that the bendix gear slides on.

Going from memory, I don't remember seeing this "bushing" on other starters. Anyone help me with this? I think my starter has broken and the bushing should be elsewhere.

As always, the help is greatly appreciated.

Tay

Sounds like your starter drive has failed. There is a bushing under the teeth that rides on the shaft. If it was mine I would probably change out the drive-For a "Newbeeeee" I think you should replace the starter as a unit with a reman from the parts store and be done with it, especially if your starter is more than a couple years old.

There's a stop collar about 1/8" long that lives between the starter drive (bendix) and the snap ring.

http://www.v8mr2.com/reference/Starter.pdf (scroll down almost all the way & there are some exploded views)

Is this what you see? It usually snaps onto the snap ring, but sometimes it will ride on the shaft in between the ring & the drive gear.

Found the problem - Thanks

I changed the starter and the problem "went away".

Thanks JimFulco,
It would appear that the parts you mentioned (great exploded diagram) were the culprits. Part #6 was loose on the shaft, and would stop the bendix gear from engaging (I think).

In any case, thanks to all. I got the 383 started last night and it was largely to the help of you at Hotrodders.

Thanks again,

Tay
