Chevy small block fuel injection
 
All, I want to build a street rod. Real new at this, but at this time in my life I have the resources and desire. Based on my research planning is key. Want some advice on selecting a fuel injected engine chevy or ford. Seems I have more options with chevy and I love the 350 small block. Used to fool around with one when I was young with the simple stuff like new carbs or intakes.

Goal is a very clean engine compartment, good performance, and something that will fit into a 33/34 ford or chevy sedan frame.

Any suggestions would be welcome from folks with more experience and skills than I have at present.

I installed an Edelbrock Proflo EFI on my 383 Chevy motor and put it in a 36 Ford PU. I like it. I also installed a Chevy Tuned Port EFI on a SBC 350, using OEM computer, a custom chip and Painless Wiring harness. Also like it. If I were to do another street rod, I would go with the GM LS1/LS6 motor for the following reasons: Generation 3 motors do not leak like the Generation 1: Has full roller valve train: Utilizes cal paks for ignition: Nice, smooth performance that will deliver exceptional fuel economy in comparison to carbed motors, TPI, TBI, or aftermarket units: Have the compact, cast brackets on the front of the motor for serpentine belt setup, almost a must for the restricted engine bay length of the 34 Ford or Chevy: Readily available in low mileage at a reasonable price: Plenty of after market bolt-ons, including performance chips, if you are so inclined.

All good advice. I just bought a TPI system off an IROC for my '76 Monte Carlo. EFI used to intimidate the crap out of me but once I took the plunge and really started reading up on it I can't wait to get started.

Learn from my mistakes.

I converted my Pro-Flo to Holley's engine management system. Read about it here: http://www.edgesz28.com/edgesZ28/fuel.htm

If money is not an issue, avoid buying used and trying to piece together a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) system. Do yourself a big favor and learn from my mistakes, buy a complete Holley Stealth Ram or Commander Series single plan systems. Both are multi-point and use the same software.

When I originally bought the Pro-Flo, not having to use a laptop was one of my reasons for getting it. I eventually found that to be a handicap. The levels of tuning a Pro-Flo are limited and once you get it right, the weather changes and you have to do it again. The Pro-Flo is very temperature sensitive, especially on hot restart.

Get the Holley, you will not be disappointed. Both styles of systems have a manifold choice (standard 23* heads, or Vortec). They also come with different size injectors, depending on your setup and HP levels you will make.

I do EFI installs for customers. I read through your post a couple of times and I think I can picture talking to you. Here is what I would do.

Go buy a Crate Chevy LS motor with computer, bolt it in, turn the key and never look back. 440 HP and idles like a ***** cat.

Unless you want a HUGE learning curve and a lot of time spent tuning, I don't think this is the time to get into a do it yourself EFI system.

I couldnt have said it better myself, for the power, ease of installation, and reliability the new LSX motors brig to the table there is no reason not to go with it as long as the funds are there. 440hp to start with is nothing to sneeze at, and the LSX takes to mods very well if you get bored in the future. Good luck with the build :thumbup:

Having done several DIY computers, I can definately say you do not want to go with DIY if you can afford otherwise. I saved a bundle doing it, but next time I think I will spend the money.
