Question Chevy Starter Problem

Hey Y'all

I have been having a intermittent starter problem .
intermittent as it has happened 3 times & fixes it's self before I can figure it out.

The problem is it wont crank.
The truck is a 1988 Chevy Dualie with a 1980 400 standard shift & 3 wire solenoid

It happens like this. . .

I drive it & then I go to start it & no crank if I turn on the dome light you can see the light dim slightly ,so after numerous attempts ,I crawl under it I wiggle & tap but nothing .

So approximately 5 ~ 10 minuets later It will bust right off before I can find the problem{S}.

I am speculating a defective solenoid or a loose connection ...possibly a bad clutch safety switch..

Any ideas?

Thanks for your time

Rob

Are you saying the problem occurs when the engine is hot?

Could be a heat sink problem....a heat shield may help.

I had the internals of the solenoid fall apart in my 79
Sometimes it would start---sometimes no

Kinda aggravating, as there was no click, do dimming of the lights--nothin'

Changed the solonoid-----no problem since,
This was probably 10 years ago.

Same thing on the 66 Elky, but I had missing teeth on the flexplate as well.

sometimes it would grab the teeth, somtimes no, AND somtimes nothing would happen--no click, no light dimming, -- just silence and the realization that I may not be going anywhere soon
