Chevy starter problems

Ok so I've read most all the posts concerning this topic. I have a 73 Chevy Nova with a 350 out of a 70s c10. All new bolts. Brand new starter from autozone... so yea it may need to be ground from what I've read. Shimmed ungodly amount still cant get it quite right and sounds like crap. All I need to know is should I go buy a "ACDelco from a Mom and Pop parts house" or should I work with the one I got... I mean would autozone even take it back? Any and all info will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Troy

have the right nose cone for the right flexplate or flywheel diameter?

no shims ?

will not need any shims with unmodified nose cone and engine block

if it needs shimmed then it is the wrong nose cone and plate/wheel diameter, or someone has milled the nose cone mounting surface down, or the starter mounting pad of the engine block

or the starter is defective

need some more info here

Small flywheel... correct starter... no modifications have been made to starter or engine block just a regular 350 block with a new starter from autozone... duralast or something like that... Wondering if the ACdelco's are a better fit? less trouble?

Are you using the proper "starter" bolts or generic hardware store bolts?

Automatic or manual tranny? Did you change the flywheel by chance? If it's an automatic with a flexplate, I've seen people put the flexplate on backwards.

Troy.. You said one of your problem's right here... I have had problem's with their starter and the pass... I don't buy any from Auto zone anymore... I think it has something to do with their cheap starters... Went to the mini starter's and no more trouble... I also got some bad ones from Napa also... I'm not sure what's happening here... But this seems to be a daily problem on the sbc's now..I hear a lot of people talking about this problem...

I also quit buying starters from the parts houses, they are all off shore. Since I bought my Powermaster Ultra Torque I have had zero issues with starters.
