Chevy steering wheel donor for 39 chevy?
I am working on a 39 chevy sedan. The 14" aftermarket steering wheels just don't fit my vision of what i want. I was thinking about a steering wheel from a 60's car. I want a 15 or 16 inch wheel, but i'm not really sure how big those chevy cars had. I looked at some 65 impala wheels on ebay, they looked pretty good, but don't know how big they are. Anyone have any idea what might look good in a 39? I will have front seats from a 03 Ford truck, Dash will be smoothed with gauges recessed like in the PT cruisers. I am going to have wood strips for a headliner, like a woody would. It doesn't really matter which GM car it came from. I have a tilt column from an early 80's van. It doesn't have the ignition switch on the column, but in the dash. Thanks for any info.

Hey 39,
Any wheel from the early 60's Chevies would look good in your 39. Most of them are about 16 1/2'' on the outside and
4 1/2' -5" deep. Those big old chrome horn rings are so cool. The right color, condition and price would be the deciding factor for me. The repops will be close to $300.

Where could one go to see pictures of various makes and models of steering wheels?

58-60 Impala wheel is 17" 5-1/2 deep

59 Belair (probably the same) has a half ring for the horn

I'll get a pic of em if you want-----I will not let go the Impala wheel though

oh----after 69---most wheels are 15"
Not too sure an early wheel will bolt onto that column.
The turn cancel cam is attatched to the wheel on my 59 wheels
You may be stuck with an 69+ wheel
I put 80s Monte Carlo wheels in both of my late 70's pickups, smaller wheels.
They look better than the truck wheels of that era.
Used a 69 GM 3-spoke in the 59 Elky----with tilt.

Pro 48 fleetline,
I am with you on the old steering wheel. That 56 is going to look good. My plan for my 39 is to use as many "junkyard" parts as I can. Its not that I don't like the nice shiney new stuff, i'm on a self imposed budget. I am trying to build a car without going broke. This is my first my first streetrod. Thanks for the info, Steven

You do realize this thread is 3 years old, right? You only posted thumbnails, not pictures. You need to re-size your pics to under 300KB and use the "manage attachments" option under "additional options" below this message reply screen.

Never mind, you didn't do anything wrong, my computer wouldn't let me open your pics or anybody elses.
