i have an 85 suburban which needs the front gears replaced in the axle. what is the easiest way to take the axles loose so i can get the pumpkin out to replace carrier bearings?

I am positively assuming you are dealing with the corporate front differential.
There is no EASY way to do it, you are looking at a couple hours to remove the hubs, rotors, calipers, spindles, and axleshafts.
Don't let it get you down, they are all the same as they were for many years now.
