Chevy Truck Rear-End Swap, Advice!
Okay i have a 91 chevy truck 2wd with the five lug wheels and 3.08 gears. I believe the rear is starting to go out and am pretty much a tight wad and don't want to spend the money to have the rear end rebuilt (never done it myself and don't know where to start!) I have access to a couple junk yards with TONS of these trucks so parts are plentiful. I am wanting to upgrade to a 3.73 gear. Does anybody know if chevy made a 5 lug rear end with 373 that is a bolt up for these trucks? Thanks for your input. I do know the codes to look for in the glove box for the rear-end ID. But don't know if chevy even made what i am looking for! thanks again.

My 03 had 3.73 gearing- but when I went to replace it the junk yard wanted
over 1000. for it as the plow trucks guys were always looking for them. The 3.40 gear rear was 400. |

All the local Pick-N-Pull type salvage yards get $150 for those axles, and don't care what ratio or year. Why is yours failing? Been overloading it? If so, get a 3/4-ton axle instead. Not 1-ton, as the spring centers are closer. Also, there's no reason to avoid the 4WD axles. |

To my understanding all the 3/4 ton axles were 6 and 8 lug? Is that true?
